Work Accomplishments Help Us Achieve Goals for Pleasure
The other day, I was chatting with a woman about a potential Marketing opportunity. Since Marketing is a classic business category where goal setting and achievement are common practice, I asked her if she set goals for herself and her business. My eyes opened wide when she told me: “I only set goals for pleasure.”
What? At first, I didn’t understand what she meant. Then she explained that although her business is how she expresses herself and shares knowledge and earns a living, she is motivated by goals for pleasure. For example, if she needs $5,000 to travel to Italy, she figures out what accomplishments she must achieve through her business to earn her the extra $5,000.
She breaks down the $5,000 goal for pleasure into concrete business accomplishments.
She thinks about:
- How many additional paid speaking engagements must I book?
- How many additional paid workshops must I hold? How many students on average?
- How many additional hours of consulting?
The ultimate combination of concrete work accomplishments becomes her roadmap or action plan. As each business achievement takes her one step closer to Italy, she also expands her business in the process!
As an added bonus, every step of the way, she knows exactly where she stands in relation to her goal. If on track or ahead of plan, she celebrates her wins. At some point, she’ll be ready to make those reservations! If she’s behind, she can assess her situation and pivot if she needs to. Maybe change up the business plan. What’s working? What isn’t?
I love the new perspective! Goals for pleasure can have the pleasant side effect of improving our business. What can be better than that?
Is this something you already practice? I’d love to learn more.
